My Right Self currently includes material from work with five individuals or couples. The primary participant in each case identifies as trans or gender-variant. The five participants span much of the diversity within the trans community/ies; transitioning from lesbian to male, heterosexual female to gay male, from male to lesbian, male to heterosexual female, and female to genderqueer.
However these labels only provide a glimpse at the underlying lifeworlds and relationships that make up the unique individuals depicted here within.
My Right Self includes text from the writings of the participants who have been given time to reflect upon and describe how their identities are related to their bodies, their sex, their gender, their sexuality, and further, how their relationships with others and society reflect back how they are perceived in the world and exist in the eyes of others. Some have also written with regard to their experiences with the healthcare system.
Most of the photography draws from the participants' homes and neighborhoods with minimal artificial light or staging. As possible, the participants have helped choose where and how to frame the images.
This project would not exist were it not for the open and courageous participation of those willing to share their stories and images. Hopefully the work will help educate broader audiences and provide inspiration for transfolk, especially youth, in search of community and validation. |
